The red wolf is one of the rare species in the world. Its scientific name is Canis rufus. They can be found in the southeastern part of the United States.
Coyotes share many similarities with red wolves. The US Fish and Wildlife Service currently considers the red wolf an endangered species.
Red wolves can be found throughout southeastern central Texas, the Illinois River Valley, northern Pennsylvania, southern New York, and the southern Gulf of Mexico. Deforestation and hunting drove the red wolf to extinction in the mid-20th century.
Later, the US administration continued the restoration of this species. Between 1987 and 1994, 63 red wolves were found in the North Carolina area. A later study showed that this number had dropped to 40.
Adult red wolves weigh between 23 and 39 kg. They are 136 to 160 cm in length. The red wolf behaves somewhat friendly and is not very threatening. The red wolf eats animals like rabbits and mice as food.
