Joe Biden surprised Elton John by presenting him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom during a ceremony at the White House on Thursday.

The medal is the highest civilian honor in the United States, and is awarded to individuals who have made "especially meritorious contributions" to the country.

Biden praised John as a "global citizen" and a "rock star" who has used his platform to promote LGBTQ rights and fight HIV/AIDS.

"Your decency, your goodness, your kindness, your compassion is what's needed today more than ever," Biden said.
John said he was "humbled and honored" to receive the medal, and dedicated it to his late mother and to his husband, David Furnish.

"I know she would be so proud, as am I," John said. "This is an honor that belongs to all the incredible people who have fought for LGBTQ rights over the years."

The ceremony was also attended by former president Bill Clinton, who awarded John the medal in 2000.

Clinton praised John for his work on behalf of AIDS research and prevention, saying he has "saved more lives than we will ever know."

John has been a vocal supporter of Biden's presidential candidacy, and performed at a fundraiser for the campaign earlier this year.
