Christian Bale has confirmed that he defended his “American Hustle” co-star Amy Adams from director David O. Russell’s on-set tirades.

In an interview with Variety, the actor said that he was prompted to speak up after witnessing Russell berate Adams during the filming of a scene.

“I was watching Amy during the take and I could see her soul being crushed,” Bale said.

The actor said he confronted Russell after the take, telling him:

“You can say whatever you want to me, you can have at it… But do not ever do that again to her.”

Bale also praised Adams for her professionalism in the face of Russell’s outbursts, saying that she never let the director “get away with” his behavior.
