Six babies of the country’s rare red coral kukri snake and their mother have been rescued by Sahidul of Panchagarh known as ‘snake friends’. The snakes were recovered from the Sardarpara area of Mirzapur Union of Atwari Upazila of Panchagarh on Saturday (January 21) afternoon.
Locals said that Khalil member of that area was digging a pond by cutting the garden with a scavenger. At that time, two rare species of red corals came out and some locals killed the two snakes. Later, seeing more snakes, the scavenger driver informed Shahidul Islam, President of the Bangladesh Wildlife and Snake Rescue Team.
After receiving the news, he quickly went to the spot and rescued a mother red coral kukri and her six cubs and released them safely into nature. At this time, he conducted an awareness campaign among the locals not to kill snakes.
On February 8, 2021, this snake was first seen in Bangladesh in the northern district of Panchagarh. Shahidul Islam rescued the red coral kukri snake injured by a scavenger from the Kaliaganj area of Jholi Shalshiri Union of Boda Upazila of the district.
Seeing this rare species of snake for the first time in the country created a lot of discussions. Research is also done on the snake. The red coral kukri is recognized as the 103rd native snake. The snake is also known as Kamalavati. Later Shahidul rescued some more snakes of this species.
Shahidul Islam said that people are motivated to kill snakes only because of ignorance. In fact, snakes are not our enemies, but our friends. Now their habitat is threatened. The land is being created by cutting down the forest. So they are leaving for a safe place. He requested to leave them in nature without killing them.
