Such a strange tree is found in South America, where the trunk and stem are filled with fruit. Information and pictures of this tree have gone viral on social media.
However, in South America, they are better known as the jabuticaba plant which is the edible fruit of a Brazilian grape.
The purple fruits grow directly on the stem of the tree and can be eaten raw or used to make jellies, jams, juices and even wine.
The tree is part of the Myrtaceae family and is found in the Brazilian states of Rio de Janeiro, Goa, and São Paulo.
Related species of the genus Myrciaria are found in Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia and Peru.
The tree derives its name from jaboti/jabuti [turtle] and kaaba [place]. It means a place where turtles are found.
Many said they had never seen such a tree before. Some pictures shared on social media show that you cannot see the root of the tree so easily. Because almost the whole tree is covered with fruit.
The 1 to 4 inch leaves of the fruit are salmon colored. But it turns dark green when mature. The fruit turns dark purple to almost black in color when ripe and is ready to eat or use as wine.
The fruit does not take much time to ripen and is usually ready for consumption within 20 to 25 days.
