A group of scientists in Romania has discovered a type of dinosaur that has never been seen before. It has an unusually flat head and is found in the Transylvania region.
Dinosaurs of this species are mainly herbivores. They lived on earth 70 million years ago. They were called dwarf dinosaurs because they were quite small in size. Experts from the University of Tübingen, the University of Bucharest, and the University of Zurich detailed their research findings in a journal.
Just before the extinction of these dinosaurs 66 million years ago, their numbers were very low in Europe. Scientists have expressed a lot of surprises as it was not known before that traces of dinosaurs could be found in this area.
The closest species to this dinosaur was found in France. Dinosaurs and other animals are believed to have migrated westward from Eastern Europe at that time. Some species returned to the Transylvania region.
Due to changes in sea level and the function of tectonic plates, sailing between nearby islands was easy. Because of this, the animals of this species have been able to move to the surrounding islands.
Scientists believe that dinosaurs could swim somewhat. Their legs and tail were very strong. They become proficient swimmers from birth.
During the Cretaceous period, when dinosaurs were most numerous, most of the European islands had a summer climate. Cretaceous reptiles lived together with small dinosaurs, crocodiles, turtles, etc.
It was previously thought that Europe’s fauna was not very diverse during the Cretaceous period. Now day by day this idea is proving wrong. So far, ten species of dinosaurs have been found there, which is quite a surprise to researchers.
