George Jetson rode his personal flying car in cartoons 60 years ago. Currently, it is being dreamed of to be implemented. Now, Jetson, a company based in Stockholm and founded by Peter Turnström and Thomas Patten, is making that dream a reality. They have developed a personal electric aerial vehicle called the Jetson One, which will be delivered in late 2023.
Turnström has considerable experience in the luxury car industry. Worked with aerospace engineer Thomas Patten in 2017 to launch the Jetsons. It differs from other companies that are developing complex electric air taxis. They wanted to make flight accessible to everyone.
The Jetson One is a single-seat aircraft that falls into the FAA’s ultralight category. This means it has certain restrictions, such as being unable to operate flights near airports or crowded areas. No pilot’s license is required to operate it.
However, the idea of flying without a pilot’s license can be surprising to some. So the Jetson team focused on making the aircraft as safe and user friendly as possible. They also include a mandatory $92,000 Jetson One instruction course.
The Jetson One weighs 190 pounds and has an aluminum frame with eight electric motors. It can stay in the air for about 20 minutes and the car has a top speed of 63 mph. Pilots control the aircraft using joysticks and throttles. The flight computer does the tracking and the auto-landing system takes care of the most critical part of the flight.
Turnstrom assured that the Jetson One is designed to fly and land safely even if one of its motors fails or the throttle is cut. A ballistic parachute is added as standard feature to ensure extra safety.
