Animals have achieved many methods to hunt on their prey – using glue nets to catch prey by spiders or displaying some delicious mussels in their mouths by turtle. There are some fish who use shooting techniques like ‘archer’. They are called archer-fish.
Sometimes referred to as the Aquatic Destructive Gunman, the tiny archer fish – usually only a few inches long – developed such an unexpected sight and precise control that it could shoot a flying insect with a water. It can do this from a few feet away. Insects then fall into the water, where they can be easily eaten.
Archer fish’s shooting skills are truly amazing. Studies have shown that these fish never miss their target, as well as that they can modify the target according to the refraction of the surface of the water.
Scientists are puzzled as to how archer fish can develop such traits.
Modern archer-fish often live in areas where vegetation hangs over the surface of the water, such as mangrove forests. The archer fish has greatly improved its shooting ability in such aquatic environments.
Insects are one of the most abundant food in the world, especially near aquatic fish, and they have taken advantage of it. There are plenty of other fish that can get water out of their mouths, much like trigger-fish.
