Director James Gunn has denied rumors that the casting for his upcoming Superman film, “Superman: Legacy,” is almost complete. The highly anticipated movie will focus on the start of Superman’s career and will be the first film of the Gunn-Safran period, with Warner Bros. aiming to release it by July 2025.
In response to a tweet from YouTube host Grace Randolph, who claimed that casting for the film was “very close” to being set, Gunn said he hadn’t talked to a single actor about the role. He explained that he was currently making private lists and prepping material for auditions.
Randolph also claimed that Logan Lerman, known for his roles in “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” and the “Percy Jackson” franchise, was Gunn’s top choice for the role of Superman. However, Gunn said he didn’t know Lerman and had never discussed him for the role.
Gunn revealed that he had been writing the script for “Superman: Legacy” before joining DC Studios as Co-head alongside Peter Safran. He had initially turned down the project, as he didn’t have a way to make the film feel unique and emotionally resonant while still giving Superman the dignity he deserved.
However, he later found a way in that centered around Superman’s heritage and how both his Kryptonian and human parents informed who he was and the choices he made. Safran has described the film as focusing on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing and embodying truth, justice, and the American way.
As of now, there is no word on who will ultimately be cast as Superman in “Superman: Legacy.”
Gunn’s tweet has sparked excitement and anticipation among fans as they eagerly await the casting announcement for the highly coveted role of Superman. Several actors have been rumored to be in the running for the role, including Nicholas Hoult, Armie Hammer, and Henry Cavill, who previously played the character in the DC Extended Universe.
Gunn’s Superman: Legacy is set to be a departure from the previous Superman films, as it will focus on the early years of the character’s career as a superhero. The film will explore Superman’s struggle to balance his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing and the impact it has on his choices as a hero.
The film is expected to be released in July 2025 and will be the first project to be released under the new leadership of DC Studios, with Gunn and Safran at the helm. Fans of the Superman franchise are eagerly awaiting the release of the film and are excited to see how the story of the beloved superhero will be brought to life on the big screen.
