Most of us have no idea about Self-Serving Bias. When we succeed in something, we praise ourselves. When we don’t get success or fail in any work, I make some reasons and excuses without taking responsibility.
Let us clarify the point with the help of an example. If we score well in an important exam, we praise ourselves. We say that we got success because we studied hard. I find excuses if I can’t pass an exam. For example:
1. The teacher asked difficult questions
2. Sir could not teach well
3. I could not give time to study due to illness
Here we are setting some external factors without taking responsibility for ourselves. This phenomenon is called Self-Serving Bias. We don’t want to look for the reason why the failure happened. We blame external factors.
We try to protect ourselves by putting the blame on others. But to find the reason behind this, we need to know about the strengths and weaknesses.
A good solution would be to consult your close friend. Ask him to discuss your strengths and weaknesses. Your friend should be more than satisfied if you can discuss these matters.
By doing this, you will know about your weak points and can adopt methods to overcome them. That’s why we should find out where our mistakes have been made and find ways to solve them without blaming external factors.
