Brazil is one of Russia’s main trading partners in the Latin American region, and in 2020, Russia exported nearly $2.2 billion worth of goods to the country. Russia has invested billions of dollars in the country’s oil and gas sector, infrastructure, and electronics industry.
Currently, China is one of Brazil’s trading partners. Brazil exported about US$67.9 billion worth of goods to China in 2020, and the country’s main exports are soybeans, iron ore, and crude petroleum. From 2007 to 2020, China has invested about 66 billion US dollars in various sectors in Brazil. Brazil has relied heavily on Chinese-made vaccines to combat Covid-19 at the start of the global pandemic.
After Jair Bolsonaro won the presidential election held in October 2018, diplomatic relations between the United States and Brazil improved significantly. In fact, US President Donald Trump’s administration called Brazil its “only major ally” outside of the “North Atlantic Security Alliance” (NATO).
The country has initiated free trade expansion into regional market arrangements with Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. Brazil has established itself as one of the fastest growing economies in the world.
The country is a founding member of the Organization of American States (OAS), the largest cooperation organization in the Western Hemisphere. The organization works to alleviate poverty in the region, strengthen peace and security, and ensure mutual cooperation in economic, social and cultural development. By participating in World War I, Brazil began to exert its influence on the global scene. Brazil was the only country from the Latin American region to be actively involved in the war.
