When James Cameron's "Avatar" was released in 2009, it was lauded for its groundbreaking visual effects.
The film went on to become the highest-grossing movie of all time, grossing over $2.7 billion worldwide.
Now, nearly 10 years later, Cameron is reflecting on the film's legacy and its impact on the modern blockbuster.
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron says that "Avatar" was a game-changer for the film industry
That its success has paved the way for other big-budget films with cutting-edge visual effects.
"I think 'Avatar' did change things," he says. "It raised the bar for performance capture and virtual production.
It created new opportunities for filmmakers to tell stories in completely immersive ways that hadn't been possible before."
Cameron adds that the success of "Avatar" has also inspired other filmmakers to push the envelope with their own films.
"I think it's had a ripple effect," he says. "Other filmmakers are now looking at 'Avatar' and saying, 'If Jim can do that, what can I do?'
And so we're starting to see films that are pushing the envelope in terms of their use of technology."
